In 1938, the Memphis Birth Control Association was formed to provide contraceptive counseling to women of limited means. These clinics were held three days a week at John Gaston Hospital. The organization was officially chartered on May 29, 1941 as the Memphis Association of Planned Parenthood, with Frances Coe as president.
